Metarverse는 가상세계를 뜻하는 단어로서 1992년 Neal Stephenson에 의해 쓰여진 과학소설, Snow Crash에서 처음 사용된 단어이다. Metaphor(은유)와 Universe의 합성어로서 실세계를 은유하고 있으나 물리적 한계는 없는 세계를 의미한다

실제로 Linden Lab(어딘지 알것이다.) 의 대표 Philip Rosedale은 와이프가 사준 Snow Crash를 보고 감명을 받아 Scond Life를 만들었다고 한다. 그는 고등학교시절 DB엔지니어였다(천재끼가 좀있었다) 그리고 대학을 나와 FreeVue라는 화상회의 웹서비스를 개발하는 회사를 차렸고 1996년 Realnetworks(왠지 낯익다) 에 합병되어 Real의 기술쪽을 맡게된다. 그렇게 때를 기다리다가 Geforce2의 보급과 인터넷이 어느정도 확산되자 Real을 떠나, Kapor라는 투자자를 만나게된다…. 이 흥미 진진한 이야기는 원문으로 보는게 나을 것 같다. 아래 링크를 보자.

“We only have 28 engineers, 140 people — we’re microscopic,” he says. “At this point, everybody is looking at this and saying, ‘This opportunity is huge, and it’s this little private company.’ ”

He knows the big players will come after him. What happens after that will determine whether Rosedale winds up becoming a tech trivia question, or the builder of the Metaverse.
